1. The Skinny Rules: The Simple, Non-negotiable Principles for Getting too Thin by Bob Harper

This book is a must for beginners. It’s written by Bob Harper, the superstar trainer, and co-host of NBC’s hit show The Biggest Loser. Bob distills his knowledge of nutrition, weight-loss strategy, and human nature down to twenty simple, nonnegotiable principles. The Skinny Rules will help you step away from a reliance on processed foods, and the need for so much sweetness, and salt.  He also covers the details of developing a plan you can stick with.

2. Get Out of Your Own Way: Overcoming Self-Defeating Behavior by Mark Goulston and Philip Goldberg

Confidence in yourself is a must if you plan on starting, and sticking with your weight loss goals. This book talks about the importance of mastering self-defeating behaviors, and shows you how to get rid of them once and for all.  It covers 40 common self-defeating behaviours, and is a great reference book.

Eating right is an integral part of weight-loss, and when embarking on a weight loss journey you want to start off with the right foods in your diet. This is a great book to show you what to shop for, and how to save money buying the best ingredients. The author also has lots of cooking plans and recipes to get you started.

4. Is Walking Good Exercise? (Achievable Fitness for Everyone) by Jonathan North

Jonathan North looks at the benefits of walking over more rigorous exercise, and it’s suitability for even the most sedentary of people. He offers information and ideas for setting up a walking plan.

5. Healing Your Emotional Self: A Powerful Program to Help You Raise Your Self-Esteem, Quiet Your Inner Critic, and Overcome Your Shame by Beverly Engel

Sometimes overeating and dependency on food is a sign of emotional trauma. To start your weight loss campaign the right way, you may need to address these issues, and raise your self-esteem. In this book the author examines a wide range of psychological abuses people suffer in childhood. She includes questionnaires, and exercises to provide you with concrete help in healing your past.
