Walk Yourself Well

Did you realise that walking is one of the easiest ways to get, and stay healthy, and increase your life expectancy? And it isn’t just your body that gets fit; your thinking and emotions benefit too.

That’s why people who stay active are happier than people who don’t.

In my post this week I’ll explore exactly how walking helps you, and give you some simple ideas for incorporating it into your life.

The benefits of walking:

  • Increases energy and stamina
  • Decreases blood pressure
  • Increases good cholesterol – HDL
  • Decreases risk of coronary disease
  • Increases happiness, fitness, and wellness
  • Decreases episodes of colds and flus
  • Increases the release of endorphins (happy hormones)
  • Bonus: It’s a free way to stay fit

You need a brisk 30 minute walk daily to achieve the health benefits of walking. That is the equivalent of 10,000 steps daily.

Here’s a quick tip: One way to keep yourself motivated is to buy and wear a pedometer that measures steps taken. You can then compete against yourself, and see your daily progress.

Guidelines for healthy walking:

1)      Always wear appropriate clothing, foot wear, and protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s rays (ever hoping we will see some sun!).

2)      Stretch before and after walking to keep you muscles loose, and prevent the build of lactic acid in the body caused by exercise.

3)      Keep sound volume low if you wear headphones. Make sure you are aware at all times of what is happening around you.

4)      Drink at least 2 litres of water per day, and make sure you stay hydrated before, during, and after walking.

5)      Have an accountability partner to keep you honest and to help you stick with your program

6)      Celebrate your success. Decide beforehand that when you reach a certain goal with your walking program you will treat yourself. Have a massage or a pedicure or buy that book you’ve been wanting.

You know how good walking is for you, how healthy it can be and how enjoyable it is, treat yourself to a walk tomorrow!
